Vol. 1, Edition 10

Who said, “give the people what they want and watch what happens”?  No, not that Barnum guy – it was our own JD! Word of mouth did the trick and the next trip to Ol D's Soda Shop on March 9th has 95 people signed up for it. Jack found another bus and driver, so there will be two buses going, (88 people) and the rest will have to follow in their cars. I'm giving up my seat on the bus because we had bought tickets to see the Diamonds a long time ago and I don't want to miss that. There's only one of the originals left and he'll probably croak before next season!  It's been really busy around here the last two weeks. The annual Can-Am golf tournament was held on February 20th and was won by the Americans by four strokes.

On Feb 22nd, our 1st annual Winter Ranch yard sale was held in the big hall. There appeared to be many tables of “treasures” for sale, as well as many buyers perusing the goods.  Lee Clement reported that the free-will offering at the Variety Show collected $420, which will be used  for the purchase of whatever is needed for next year's show. Lee is selling CDs of the Variety Show
for $2.00 each.

Memorial Service on February 26th served as a time of remembrance for those Winter Ranch family and friends we have lost in 2012. The service was lovely, with some people speaking fondly of friends they had lost. Our thanks to Jeanine Helmer for organizing this service every year. Margarita pool party on Feb 25th was another huge success for the billiards players.

Virginia Darby was the prize winner for best Mexican Costume. Also performed and danced to were the Hokey Pokey, bunny hop (pictured above) and the Chicken Dance. Many people got into the spirit of the day and dressed in their Mexican finery. For details about the prizes given away and more pictures, check out the WR Activity Blog. www.winterranchactivities.blogspot.com

Wednesday, February 27th, was our annual Flag Day ceremony, always a moving experience for all.

Our Winter Ranch population is comprised of folks from 29 different states and six Canadian provinces. On Flag Day, however, all 50 flags are carried. Iowa is still the leader with 146 residents.
(Someone told me that when anyone dies in IA in the winter, they have to send down to Texas for pallbearers.) Missouri is next with 116, Illinois is 3rd with 96, Minnesota 88, Michigan 85, WI 54 and
Ontario, Canada with 32.

Activity Board results were announced on February 27th. Shirley Ress was replaced by Lee Benfield for Music, with thanks for her many years of service. Larry Anenson replaced Dave Arrasmith in
Indoor and Outdoor Sports and Paul Wilson replaced Don Mueller as Member at Large. Along with the other board members, these people will advise how the money collected for activities is spent.

Sundays at 6 pm. will be Movie Night on the big screen. Movies are scheduled for March 10 and 17.

Vicki Miller reported Doug McIvers got a Hole-in-1.

March 6th will be another charity golf scramble – this one between Trophy Garden and Winter Ranch. Proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes fund.

The theme for this year's Alamo Parade was Disney, and Winter Ranch sent mousketeers, Cruella DeVille, Cinderella, and Dalmatians, Dalmatians, Dalmatians, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, winning once more the Overall Trophy, and the Senior Division Trophy.

Here are Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. I think most of the spectators were from Winter Ranch as well. It was a wonderful day for a parade.

Show and Share was held on Sunday, March 3rd. This is when everyone who has been working on various craft projects gets to show them off. It's a marvelous collection of creativity.

SENIOR OLYMPICS REPORT 2013
Bowling Team #1 – A - 2nd Place.
(Rear) Steve Good, Bonnie Ford, JD Murray,
Leon Green and Judy Good

Other bowlers who placed were Leon Green, singles Class A, 4th place. Also Leon and Lois Green came in 6th in the mixed doubles B. Bowling Team #2, Class B, were Janice Bell, Al Bell, Lois Green, Lud Lerdon and Bill Putsky, who placed 4th.

Flo Reed and Dodie Anenson competed in the Pickle Ball competition for the first time. We're proud of you ladies for stepping up. Now that you know what to expect over there, you will do better next year.

Don Granger and Bill Siglin tied for 5th in single Billiards.
Dick and Marcia Fabricius competed in the Cribbage competition, and Marcia participated in the Crossword Puzzles, coming in 6th.
Flo and Doug Reed did the Bike and Birding Tour, along with about 38 other members of the Bike Club.

Red Lobster parking lot. Sign reads, "low emitting high efficient vehicle parking only."

Still to come in the Senior Olympics is the Walk and Talk (whatever that might be) and on Feb 27 was something called The Great Chase Team, in which Dick and Janet Kirkman and Glenn and Judy Timmer participated. Congratulations to all who participated. We're proud of each and every one of you.

We have one more great restaurant to tell you about. This one is Taqueria La Mexicana. Excellent service and delicious food. AND very reasonable prices. This might be replacing Costa Messa as our
new favorite, except it doesn't have a liquor license...only beer and wine. It's easy to find – take 495 west, turn right at the new Walgreens and it's on the right in the first block.

REMINDERS:

Don't forget to leave mailing labels for mail forwarding when you leave. Clean up your lot and make sure nothing is left that could blow away and cause damage. You would be surprised at what a Texas summer storm can stir up!

Shuffleboard is being played on Monday nights at 6:30 pm.

Winter Ranch Appreciation Day is Monday, March 28 at 7 pm. Pans of Steel will be entertaining, with ice cream following the entertainment.

In keeping with our “western” theme, Tuesday social hours have been renamed The Round-up.

If you are among those heading out soon, drive carefully. We want to see you back again next year!

Yoga is every Monday from 8 to 9 a.m. It's $5 per session and is being led by an expert.

Zumba is every Monday from noon to 1 p.m. Come and shake your booty. That is $2.00 per session.

No rate increase this year, which I'm sure everyone knows by now. Great news for all of us on our limited budgets.

Still three bus trips left this month – March 7th is a border patrol trip, line up at 12:30. Show up just in case someone else doesn't.

March 9th is the Ol D Soda Shop trip, mentioned earlier. One more symphony concert on March 26. JD is trying to get a few more scheduled, so if you have anything you'd like to see, stop in and talk to him.

Lynn has recovered from her recent surgery and we're happy to see her up and around again.

Might be one more newsletter toward end of March. Until then, be kind to each other, be safe and be healthy!
