December 12th Wednesday Morning Meeting News

We grew from  506 to 543 residents
in the park this week.  Welcome home
Winter Ranch residents!

General News:
  • The Craft Fair yesterday was a great success.  Big Thank Yous to all our volunteers:  the kitchen staff, the runners, the pie donors and the guys from Monday night Bingo and Dominos that helped set up.  Without volunteers this park would not be able to offer all the events that we do!  The pie makers earned $89 which was donated to quilting for the needy.
  • Several people have signed up for the Holiday Lighting Contest and the park is starting to look really festive.  If you want to enter your lot in the contest, sign up on the registration sheet posted on the Bulletin Board across from the Mail Room by noon on December 14th.  Prizes will be awarded at the December 24th Christmas Party.  Prizes are being donated by various groups in the park.  For more details on the contest, see the Blog archives or the postings in Friendship Hall.
  • The Church Board is looking for a retired pastor for next year.  If you know of anyone who might be interested, contact Jan Howard, Lot 717.
  • The office is still collecting donations for Christmas for the workers.  Please get your gift in by Monday or Tuesday.
  • The Angel Tree (Coordinators:  Diana Mollerus and Patty Ellison) is now up in the Big Hall.  Take a tag(s) off the tree, purchase gifts from $5 to $10 and then wrap the gift(s).  Put the tag(s) that you took and attach them to the wrapped gift(s).  Then keep the gift until the Wednesday morning meeting on December 19th when you can place them on the stage for delivery to ARISE.  The gifts will be distributed to needy children in the ARISE "Little Mexico" neighborhood.  In some cases these gifts will be the only ones the children receive.
  • The Computer Group has posted the classes that will be available starting in January.  Please register on the signup sheets on the Bulletin Board across from the Mail Room.
  •  Ron Doershug will be out of the park for two weeks but will be maintaining the Prayer Request Website.  Just send him or an e-mail or call him while he is gone and he will get the information on-line.
  • The Good Samaritan Gifts will be wrapped on December 20th at 9 AM in the Big Hall.  Come help wrap!
  • The Picture Directories are in and if you purchased one last year, you can pick them up in the Activity Office.  There are also some pictures that were ordered last year in the Activity Office.
  • HB Hulsey, our Veterans' Advocate, announced a Veterans' Trip on January 8th to tour facilities in the valley.  Signup and information is on the Veterans' Bulletin Board in the Big Hall.
  • Cathy noted that Elena had picked up a suggestion in the bathroom asking that hand sanitizers be installed in the bathrooms with the onset of the flu season.  There are hand sanitizers in various areas of the buildings, however, soap and water works the best so we won't be putting hand sanitizers in the bathrooms.
  • Entertainment tickets are on sale now in the Activities Office for January and February.  We have a great line-up this year!  The schedule is located on the right hand column of the blog under "Entertainment Schedule".
  • JD will start giving out money for the Christmas meals on Monday.  Stop in the office if you are in charge of a Christmas table.
  •  Wanda Wheeler wanted to let people know that the Recycling Bins that are now located by the dumpsters are not really Recycling Bins.  Cathy ordered new dumpsters and that is what they sent.  She and Ron Doershug are still working on getting some recyling dumpsters here.  Alamo and San Juan are not working well together so she is going to attend a City Council meeting and see if she can get things straightened out.  In the meantime, if you would like to recycle cleaned tin cans, paper, or cardboard, you can drop them off at her place and she will see that it gets recycled.
  • Our coordinator for the Golden Age Olympics is Marcia Fabricius, Lot 618.  There are newspaper brochures available about the various events in the Small Hall.  Take one and sign-up for the event(s) you are interested in using the registration sheet inside the brochure.  If you would like to participate in the games, see Marcia.  Literally 1000's of Winter Texans participate in the games over the course of three months (January, February and March).  There are contests for about everything you can think of:  cards, cooking, bowling, shuffleboard, billiards, etc. etc.  Marcia can fill you in.  Most contests take one-half to one day.  When you enter you receive a t-shirt, a ticket to the sock hop and you have a chance to win a bronze, silver or gold medal!  Lynn encouraged us to participate because a couple of other Wilder Parks do participate and they are 2nd and 3rd place winners!
  •  Ladies Luncheon Group fundraiser - buy chances on a GPS until with free updates.  They will be sold before and after the Wednesday morning meetings.
  • The Billiards Group is also having a fundraiser.  They are selling chances on a home-made pool cue.  Sales are before and after Wednesday morning meeting.
 Prayer Requests:
  • Charles Kroll is home from the hospital.  Keep he and Elinor in your prayers.  Might even want to send them a Christmas card.
  • Cathy is requesting prayers for her daughter who is having back surgery this week.
  Event News:
  • Folk Lore Dancers - These youngsters (elementary school children) will be performing in the Big Hall on December 13th at 6:30 PM.  This is a free-will offering that goes to the care and feeding of these children.

  • The Ladies Luncheon with a Christmas theme is scheduled for December 18th at noon in the Big Hall.  Jan Wilson is selling tickets after the Wednesday morning meetings.  Tickets are $8.
  • The Dance this week is Diego on December 14th at 7 PM.
Calendar Updates:
  • The Packers/Bears game will be on the large screen TV in Friendship Hall on Sunday at 11:30 AM.  Bring your snacks/drinks and lawn chairs and have a good time!
  • There is a Men's Billiards Tournament every Monday evening.  $5 for park residents and $7 for non-residents.  The group is still looking for some more players.
  • Saturday Night Bingo starts this week in the Big Hall at 6:30 PM.
  • Short Bike Rides start on December 18th.  Signup is on the Bulletin Board across from the Mail Room.
  • If you like to go bowling, meet the group this Friday at 1 PM at Flamingo Bowl at 3301 North 23rd Street in McAllen.  Contact Judy Good, Lot 522, if you would like to join.
  • The Zumba Gold class started on Monday at Noon.  There will be some date changes due to Christmas and New Years - probably to Wednesdays.
  • Potlucks have started on Monday at 5:00 PM.  Bring a dish that will serve at least eight people and a serving spoon.  Also bring your own table service.  Iced Tea and coffee are provided.

Volunteers Needed:
  • See Lynn in the Activities Office if you would like to be the Coordinator for the Christmas Golf Cart Parade.  Just need to set a date and get the information out.
  • Saturday Night Bingo still needs a few workers.  See JD in the Activities Office.
  • JD is looking for some help in cleaning out the storage room in the loft in Friendship Hall on Thursday, December 13th, at 9 AM.  The items that are removed from the storage area will be delivered to Arise.
  •  Lynn still needs a Chair for the Christmas Eve Party that is held on December 24th in the afternoon.  This is a finger-food potluck.
  • The Salvation Army has requested some bell ringers to ring at the Walgreens in Alamo.  You can volunteer for this event by signing up on the Signup Sheets on the Wall by the restrooms in Friendship Hall.  If you have questions, see  Karen Hockemeir, the Salvation Army Volunteer Coordinator, at Lot 563.
  • Lynn would like a Coordinator to lead a new Garden Club group that would assist in beautifying the public areas of the park.  Talk to Lynn about what would be involved.
Bus Trips & Tours:
  • Bus Trips - Because the bus is in the shop, the following bus trips have been cancelled:
    • December 10th Mystery Trip - come to the Activity Office to pick up your refund
    • December 13th Border Patrol
    • Hildalgo Lights on December 14th and 17th
    • December 18th McAllen Symphonic Band - you will have to find your own transportation for this.
The basilica tour on December 28th may still be a go.
  • Tours - Our Tour Director, Gail Field,  has several Bus Trips listed on her Bulletin Board in Friendship Hall along with her business cards.  There is one room open for the New Orleans Trip.  There are also a few open spots on the three day trip to San Antonio for $299 per person.  Give Gail a call if you are interested.
The 50/50 Drawing raised $107 for the Exercise Group.

Note from the Blog Administrator:  If you have pictures from any of the events or bus trips trips that you would like to share on the blog, you can send them to me and I'll post them on the blog.  Just send them to my e-mail at :  blogwinterranch@yahoo.com
